Stop Baths Shopping Guide

Stop baths are an essential part of the darkroom process for black and white analog photography. A stop bath is a liquid chemical that halts the developing process when it is poured onto exposed film or photosensitive paper. Without a stop bath, the developing effect would continue beyond the desired result.

When shopping for a stop bath, there are two main types to consider: Acid and Alkaline. Acid stop bath solutions contain acetic acid and are used mainly for black and white prints. Alkaline stop baths contain sodium sulfite and work best with color prints.

It is important to select the right type of stop bath for your particular needs. If you plan to use both black and white and color prints, you may want to buy two separate solutions. Look for a brand that comes with a mixing chart and clear instructions on how much of the solution should be used.

The amount of time the stop bath needs to stay on the film or paper also depends on the type of solution being used. Generally, Acid solutions require less time than Alkaline solutions, usually between 5-30 seconds. Make sure to read the instructions provided by the manufacturer before use.

Most stop baths come in liquid form. However, some brands offer single-use pre-measured tablets. These are great for convenience, but the cost adds up quickly if you plan on using them regularly.

Finally, when storing your stop bath solution, make sure to keep it away from light and extreme temperatures. The shelf life of the solution will vary depending on the type, so always consult the manufacturer’s guidelines.
